SoldierStrong forms advisory board

Stamford, CT, September 11, 2014 – SoldierStrong, a Connecticut-based organization whose mission is helping our service members take their next steps forward, announced today the formation of a Board of Advisors to provide counsel on ways to better serve and assist members and veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

The Advisory Board is comprised of Former United States Senator Joseph Lieberman, Philanthropist John Linnartz, Former CEO Linda McMahon, Colonel Bill Smullen (US Army – RET), Special Advisor to former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State General Colin Powell, and Retired Vice Admiral Bob Murrett.

“The sacrifices of the young men and women who have served our country so well must never be forgotten,” said Senator Lieberman. “In fulfilling its mission to help service members take their next steps forward, SoldierStrong makes clear in very concrete and meaningful ways we haven’t forgotten their sacrifices, nor have we forgotten our obligations to them. I’m pleased to join the SoldierStrong Advisory Board to support this mission and help expand its reach to all those veterans who need our support.”

“It’s great to be associated with SoldierStrong, which continues to evolve, and make a very real positive contribution to the lives of active duty and veteran service members,” said Vice Admiral Murrett.

“We are excited to have such an extraordinary group of individuals join our Advisory Board, said SoldierStrong Co-Founder, Chris Meek. “Each member brings something different to the table, which will help SoldierStrong achieve our mission and further our success in assisting our nation’s heroes.”

Run to Home Base: Fenway Park, Boston – July 19, 2014

Run to Home Base: Fenway Park, Boston – July 19, 2014

On July 19, 2014, the Home Base Program and the Boston Red Sox Foundation held its fifth annual “Run to Home Base” event at historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. SoldierStrong is honored to have been in attendance as one of the event’s invited spotlight charities.  “Run to Home Base” is a 9k charity run (and 3k walk, “Walk to Home Base”) that starts outside of Fenway Park, goes around the Fenway/Kenmore area, leads back into Fenway Park itself and is punctuated by the unique experience of tagging Fenway’s storied home plate.

Together, donors and volunteers contributed, collected and assembled over 1,100 care packages representing over 3,800 pounds of supporting materials and gear for our troops overseas.  Far away from their families and homes for extended periods of time, not only do these care packages serve functional purpose, but the packages also let every recipient know that we at home are thinking of them and want to make sure they have what they need.

Thank you to the 2,600-plus participants who came out for the event, thank you to the Home Base Program for inviting us to attend, and thank you to the Boston Red Sox Foundation and organization for hosting and having us at “The Cathedral of Boston.”  Thank you to each and every donor and benefactor for your selfless support and generosity.  Thank you to all the volunteers who were given the Herculean task of making it all happen and executed to perfection.  Our mission together continues as long as one of our service personnel or veterans needs our assistance or support.  We hope and look forward to seeing each of you again at our next event, at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System on August 26th, or at next year’s “Run to Home Base.”

American Airlines partners with SoldierStrong to help veterans walk again

STAMFORD, Conn., July 10, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Not-for-profit SoldierStrong announced today that American Airlines has become the official airline of SoldierStrong. American Airlines  will support the transportation needs of a representative from SoldierStrong and a veteran with spinal cord injuries to fly to Veteran’s Hospitals across the U.S. to demonstrate how an Ekso™ (OTCQB:EKSO) robotic exoskeleton can help veterans living with spinal cord injury, stroke and other neurological conditions walk again. Ekso™ is a ready-to-wear, battery-powered bionic suit – or exoskeleton – which enables individuals with lower extremity paralysis to stand up and walk.

“We are honored to have American Airlines as a corporate sponsor. Their contribution will play a vital role in helping SoldierStrong assist our nation’s heroes,” said SoldierStrong founder, Chris Meek. “Together, we can help our service members literally take their next step forward.”

About SoldierStrong

SoldierStrong was founded in 2009 to provide basic necessities such as baby wipes, socks and sunscreen to American soldiers fighting for our country in the trenches of Afghanistan and Iraq. As more of our soldiers return home to the U.S., SoldierStrong continues to assist our nation’s heroes in re-acclimating to civilian life by offering scholarships for colleges and trade schools and offering paralyzed soldiers an opportunity to gain mobility outside of a wheelchair.
